Installing a Non-Plug-and-Play GPIB Interface in Windows 95/98/2000

Hardware: GPIB>>Plug-in Controllers>>AT-GPIB/TNT

Problem:
I have a legacy GPIB interface with jumpers and DIP switches. It is non-plug-and-play. How do I install this interface into a Windows 95/98/2000 machine?

Solution:
Complete the following steps to install your AT-GPIB/TNT or PCII/IIA interface in Windows 95/98/2000.

NOTE: The AT-GPIB/TNT is the only jumpered card to be supported in Windows 2000. The PCII/IIA is not supported in Windows 2000. It is only supported in Windows 95, 98, and ME. For more information regarding supported cards and driver versions, see the link below entitled "Current GPIB Driver Versions".

  1. Without the card installed in the computer, install the driver software from diskettes or from the executable, available for download from the National Instruments Web or FTP site.

  2. After the software installs successfully, select Start » Settings » Control Panel.

  3. Select the Add New Hardware icon.

  4. The Add New Hardware Wizard prompts you to begin installing your new hardware. Click the Next button.

  5. The wizard prompts you to have the system detect the new hardware. Click the No button.

  6. The next screen prompts you for the hardware interface type you want to install. Scroll down the list and select Other Devices.

  7. The wizard displays a screen with a list of manufacturers on the left and a list of models on the right.

  8. Scroll down the list and select National Instruments. The wizard displays a list of boards on the right screen.

  9. Select AT-GPIB/TNT or GPIB-PCII from the alphabetized list. The GPIB-PCII/IIA is not supported in Windows 2000 and will not show up in the list. The PCII/IIA must be used under Windows 95, 98 or ME. There are problems with the base I/O address if you use PCIIA mode. National Instruments strongly recommends that users use the GPIB-PCII/IIA board in PCII mode instead.

  10. After you select the proper board type, you see a screen showing resource types and the proper setting. Copy these settings and set up your hardware to match those of these resources that Windows 95/98/2000 determines to be free.

  11. Finish the installation and then shut down your system. Install the board into your computer. Once you reboot, Windows 95/98/2000 typically shows one of the following messages: New HW Found, Building Driver Information Database, or a message that indicates which driver to install. If this message appears, select the Windows default driver. Windows 95/98/2000 is simply detecting the board presence.

  12. To ensure that the installation was successful, go to the Control Panel and select the Device Manager tab. The board should appear under National Instruments GPIB Interfaces without an exclamation point.

  13. To configure devices, highlight National Instruments GPIB Interfaces and select Properties. To configure the board, expand the Interfaces and double-click the appropriate board.
