Why Is My LabVIEW VI Not Editable?

Primary Software: LabVIEW Development Systems>>LabVIEW Full Development System
Primary Software Version: 1.0
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: LabVIEW Development Systems>>LabVIEW Professional Development System

Problem:
Certain toolbar buttons are missing from the front panel of my LabVIEW VI. For example, the Text Settings and Align Objects buttons do not show up. The VI seems to be running, but the Abort button is grayed out. Also, I cannot select certain tools, such as the Connect Wire tool, the Position/Size/Select tool, and the Edit Text tool on my block diagram. What causes this behavior, and how can I fix it?

Solution:
The VI is most likely in run mode. When in run mode, neither the block diagram nor the front panel design can be edited or modified. Setting your VIs to open in run mode may be desirable if you want to keep the application in VI format (as opposed to an executable) but don't want the user to accidentally modify the VI.

To change the VI to edit mode, select Operate»Change to Edit Mode, or press Ctrl+M to toggle between the two modes.

The default mode for VIs can also be set in the LabVIEW environment. Complete the following steps to prevent LabVIEW from opening VIs in run mode by default:

LabVIEW 5.x
Select Edit»Preferences»Miscellaneous and ensure that Open VIs in Run Mode is unchecked.

LabVIEW 6.x and 7.x
Select Tools»Options»Miscellaneous and ensure that Open VIs in Run Mode is unchecked.

LabVIEW 8.x
Select Tools»Options»Environment and ensure that Open VIs in Run Mode is unchecked.

LabVIEW 2009 or later
In the LabVIEW.ini file, set the openInRun configuration token to False (the default value). Refer to KnowledgeBase 4SLE79VU: Changes with the Options Dialog Box in LabVIEW 2009 for more information on modifying the LabVIEW.ini file
