Setting Up the GPIB-ENET/100

Hardware: PXI/CompactPCI>>Controllers

Problem:
What step by step process can I follow to set up and verify communication with my GPIB-ENET/100?

Solution:
To add the GPIB-ENET/100 to your system and communicate in Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX) you must first launch the GPIB-ENET/100 Wizard. To launch this Wizard, follow the steps below:
  1. Connect the device to the power with the lead supplied, and use a crossover ethernet cable to connect between the ethernet port on the PC and the ethernet port on the GPIB-ENET/100.
  2. Connect the GPIB Instrument or instrument simulator to the GPIB-ENET/100 via a standard GPIB cable. Switch on the unit, and the LED's on the top will start flashing.
  3. Launch MAX if it is not already open.
  4. Right Click on Devices and Interfaces and select Create New...

    MAX Configuration

  5. Click on GPIB Interface in the window which populates a tree of options.

    MAX Create New...

  6. Click Finish.

Note: You can also launch the GPIB-ENET/100 Wizard by navigating to Start » All Programs » National Instruments » NI-488.2 and select the Add GPIB-ENET/100 Wizard.

Now that you have launched the GPIB-ENET/100 Wizard, click Next to start the process of installation and configuration of the GPIB-ENET/100.

  1. It will then show three pictures of your device; click Next.

    Add BPIB-ENET/100 Wizard

  2. A dialog box will appear asking you to specify the state of the lights on the device. A steady amber indicates that the device has already been configured and that you can browse for the device on a local subnet. A rapid red/amber flash indicates that the device has not been configured with a name or IP address. Select the appropriate option and click Next >.

  3. Select which GPIB-ENET/100 would you like to connect to. if you don't know the name or address of your GPIB-ENET/100, you can search for all available units on the local subnet..

    Specify GPIB

  4. This will launch the NI Ethernet Device Configuration Utility. Select your GPIB-ENET/100 from the list and click Select. Alternatively, you can manually enter the IP Address or Hostname of your device in the Enter IP Address or Hostname field.

Note: If you manually enter the IP address or hostname, ensure that it is correct. The GPIB-ENET/100 will still add to your system even if the IP address or hostname is incorrect. If this happens, you will not be able to communicate with your instruments through the GPIB-ENET/100 until you correct it.

  5. Click Next.
  6. The GPIB-ENET/100 should be detected as shown in the picture below.

  7. Click Next
  8. In MAX you will now see the GPIB-ENET/100 as a GPIB interface.
  9. Right click on the GPIB-ENET/100 and select Scan for Instruments.
  10. When your instrument populates (which it should if it is turned on and connected to your GPIB-ENET/100), click the plus sign next to your GPIB-ENET/100 to expose your instrument list.
  11. Right click the instrument and select Communicate with Instrument. This will launch the NI-488.2 Communicator, where you can make a query, write to it and then read the response given by the instrument.

    NI-488.2 Communicator

If your communication test passes, your GPIB-ENET/100 is now configured for your system.

Using LabVIEW, you can communicate in a more advanced manner with the instrument. Navigate to Find » Examples » Hardware Input and Output » GPIB and you are able to use one of the examples to communicate with the instrument.
