Importing Large ASCII Files in DIAdem

Primary Software: DIAdem
Primary Software Version: N/A
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: DIAdem

Problem:
I need to open a very large ASCII file (several hundred MB) in DIAdem. When I try to use the ASCII import wizard to open the data in the data portal, DIAdem freezes and sometimes crashes. DIAdem claims to handle large amounts of data but it fails to read my file. Is there another way to import my data?

Solution:
DIAdem can handle large amounts of data, but there is a limitation on the ASCII import wizard. Depending on the size of your RAM and the speed of your processor, it may not be possible to import some ASCII files using DIAdem. In order to open your data in DIAdem, you will need to do one of the following:
  1. Split the data into multiple files and import each separately.
  2. Write a program that can open the file and save the data in TDM format. TDM files are the native file format in DIAdem so no import will be necessary. Furthermore, the TDM format is a binary format and will often times drastically reduce the total file size. Such a program can be written using the TDM storage VIs in LabVIEW, or in any language that can call a C DLL. To explore the latter option, refer to Reading and Writing TDM/TDMS Files.
