Secondary Software: N/A

Problem:
Why can't I install NI-488.2 v2.5.5 on PowerPC-based Macintosh Computers running Mac OS 10.5.x?
or
Why am I getting a boot time crash after upgrading from Mac OS 10.4 to Mac OS 10.5 with NI-488.2 v2.5.5 installed?

Solution:
During the development of NI-488.2 v2.5.5, we encountered a major problem with PowerPC-based Macintosh computers running Mac OS 10.5.x. The symptom of this problem is a boot time crash which prevents the system from being used while NI-488.2 v2.5.5 is installed. This issue has been escalated to Apple, and we are actively working on this problem with their help.

To prevent users from running into this issue, the installer for NI-488.2 v2.5.5 prevents installation on PowerPC-based Macintosh computers running Mac OS 10.5.x. However, users may still install NI-488.2 v2.5.5 on PowerPC-based Macintosh computers running Mac OS 10.4.x and later upgrade to Mac OS 10.5.x. At that point, the crash will be encountered. If this occurs, users may perform the following steps to eliminate the crash so that they may boot their systems again:
  1. Boot the computer into single-user mode by holding down Apple+S while powering the machine on.
  2. The computer will boot to a command prompt; enter the following commands:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    rm -rf /Library/StartupItems/gpibenumsvc
  3. Reboot the machine by entering reboot at the command prompt. It should now boot normally.
  4. Note that the above steps will disable the NI-488.2 driver on the system.
