How Do I Use Remote VI Server Over the Network?

Primary Software: LabVIEW Development Systems>>LabVIEW Full Development System
Primary Software Version: 7.1
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

How do I use Remote VI Server over the network?

First, you need to open a reference to another LabVIEW application from a remote computer to the server computer. You do this using the Open Application Reference function. Then open a reference to a VI using the Open VI Reference function. After that, you can use the Property and Invoke Nodes. (All are found on the Functions»Application Control palette).

Important issues for the server computer:
  1. LabVIEW should be launched and the VI should be in memory.
  2. In LabVIEW 6.x and later, go to Tools»Options... (or Edit»Preferences... in LabVIEW 5.x and previous) and do the following:
    • In the VI Server: Configuration, check the TCP/IP Protocol.
    • In the VI Server: TCP/IP Access, allow access to the remote computer or to any computer using an asterisk (*).
    • In the VI Server: Exported VIs, export the local VI or all VIs using an asterisk (*).

Note: When opening an Application Reference to a LabVIEW application at a remote computer, you need to specify the machine address or name. If you type the host name of the remote machine and your application seems to hang, you may have a DNS problem that is preventing your machine from resolving the IP address of the remote host. Try the IP address of the remote machine instead.  If the IP address or machine name are not recognized on the network, you will receive an error similar to the one below:

If this occurs, make sure that the IP address or the machine name are entered correctly and are on the network so they can be accessed.  If the remote computer is not allowing access to the computer you are using, then you will receive an error similar to this image:

If you receive this error, then the VI Server configuration and machine access need to be configured on the remote computer like mentioned above.  This computer needs to allow access to the computer that you are using.
