Different File Structures When Exporting Data from the Digital Waveform Editor

Primary Software: Other NI Software>>Digital Waveform Editor
Primary Software Version: 2.0
Primary Software Fixed Version: N/A
Secondary Software: N/A

Problem:
I am trying to export my data from the Digital Waveform Editor and then open that file with 3rd party software. There are three different file types you can choose from within the Digital Waveform Editor. However, I need to know the structure of these files so that I can interpret the data.

Solution:
The Digital Waveform Editor allows you to export your data into three formats:
  • Binary - The binary file that is created consists of raw data (U32, Big-Endian). There is no header, it is just a long list of the data where each 32 bits represents the different values on the 32 lines at each clock pulse (even if only 16 digital lines are used, it is still stored as a U32).
  • ASCII - The ASCII file that is created is a tab-delimited text file (same format as a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet) with each column dedicated to a different channel. The first row contains the channel names and each row after that contains the value of each line for every clock pulse.
  • HWS (Hierarchical Waveform Storage) - This data type is a proprietary National Instruments data type. They are written as binary files, and are used for storing digital waveforms. For more information, refer to the related links.
